![]() ![]() Once I got into it, I could not put it down. This story is one of the most unique stories I’ve ever read, even if it’s billed as “Gossip Girl meets Get Out.” The fact that someone was able to cook this story up in their brain and then write it in a way as compelling as it’s written in Ace of Spades is absolutely positively MIND BOGGLING to me. Can someone tell me what these debut writers are eating and drinking these days because the creativity I’ve been experiencing over the last two or so years has been like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. That being said, I can and will tell you about how the writing in this story is unreal. I beg you to consume reviews of this book with caution because any spoilers will take away from the emotional ride that is this story. ![]() The synopsis is short for a reason and that reason is that for you to enjoy this book to the fullest extent, you need to feel as anxious as the MC’s. But here’s the thing, you truly need to go into this blind. I don’t take the following words lightly, so please understand that I mean them: This book is absolutely flawless. Seeing POC with REALISTIC features on the cover of books makes me feel like some other little boy or girl wandering through the library will be so joyful at being able to find those characters and stories that they see themselves in. It just calls to my inner child who used to wander through the shelves at the library searching for books with characters who looked like me. I don’t think there will ever come a day where I won’t DIE over seeing dark-skinned black girls and boys on book covers. Normally I don’t consider the cover in the review of my books because in general they typically have ZERO bearings over the quality of the story inside BUT this cover deserves a MOMENT. Now having read this book, I’m SO GLAD I let my internet book friends peer pressure me into becoming a YA lover because had they not, I would have missed out on Ace of Spades.įirst things first, let’s discuss the cover. If you’ve been following along with the evolution of my reading tastes, you’d know that YA hasn’t always been my jam but since joining the Instagram book community and being exposed to so many new YA authors and subgenres, YA has become one of my most-read genres. Truthfully that would suffice for the review of this book BUT because this is quite literally a book review blog, I’ll detail some extended thoughts EVEN THOUGH all I want to do is scream “READ THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY” to strangers I pass on the street. ![]() And they’re planning much more than a high-school game… REVIEW Head girl Chiamaka isn’t afraid to get what she wants, but soon everyone will know the price she has paid for power. Talented musician Devon buries himself in rehearsals, but he can’t escape the spotlight when his private photos go public. Because anonymous texter, Aces, is bringing two students’ dark secrets to light. Welcome to Niveus Private Academy, where money paves the hallways, and the students are never less than perfect. An incendiary and utterly compelling thriller with a shocking twist that delves deep into the heart of institutionalized racism, from an exceptional new YA voice. ![]()
